"Hurricane Earl" is moving towards the North Carolina coast as a Category 2 hurricane:




Hurricane Earl will pass near the islands of North Carolina early Friday and approach the southeast New England, which already has declared a state of alert. Hurricane-force winds extending 110 miles from its center, while winds with tropical storm force have a range of 335 kilometers. Storm surges are predicted with "large breaking waves and destructive" that can cause hangovers and dangerous currents.
